How to stop UPS brokerage fees from hitting your customers

Brokerage fees are not a penalty and not avoidable by asking nicely. They are triggered by a choice in how you ship, which means they are removable by changing that choice.

What triggers the fee

When a parcel crosses into the US with import charges unpaid, somebody has to make the entry and advance the duty to customs. On a courier parcel, that somebody is the carrier’s in-house broker.

The brokerage or disbursement fee is what they charge for it, and because the parcel was shipped duties unpaid, it is billed to the recipient along with the duty itself.

The three real options

Keep shipping duties unpaid. Your customers keep paying the fee and you keep absorbing the refusals and reviews. Cheapest on paper, most expensive in practice.

Ship duties paid and eat the cost. The customer experience is clean but your margin takes the duty and the fee silently on every order.

Ship duties paid and quote landed cost at checkout. The customer sees one honest total, agrees to it, and is never contacted by the carrier for money. You are billed, and you already collected for it.

Why the third option gets skipped

Because brands are told it requires a higher Shopify tier. Shopify’s own managed duties features are gated by plan, and a brand doing a few hundred US orders a month will not justify Plus pricing on that basis alone.

So they stay on duties unpaid, and the cost shows up somewhere that does not look like shipping: refund rate, support hours, review sentiment.

Checking whether this is costing you

Pull three months of US orders. Count refused and returned parcels and total the freight both ways. Search your support inbox for "brokerage", "customs" and "duty". Read your last fifty reviews for fee complaints.

If those three numbers together exceed what landed-cost collection would cost you in slightly lower conversion, the decision is already made.

DoorFree exists to make the third option available without the plan upgrade — quote, collect, ship prepaid, reconcile on your side.

Next step

Want this checked against your own numbers?

Shipping duties unpaid means the driver asks your customer for money they did not agree to pay. Some pay it resentfully, some refuse the parcel, and some write about it. DoorFree collects landed cost at checkout — without a Shopify Plus upgrade.
